Welcome to the Real Work
Breaking 80 is where golf gets serious. You're no longer just learning the game — you're refining it. The margin for error shrinks dramatically. At the 90 level, you could get away with some loose shots and make it up elsewhere. In the 70s, every stroke is earned.
This is also where coaching changes fundamentally. We stop talking about "hit it straighter" and start talking about numbers. Launch monitor data. Strokes gained analysis. Specific performance benchmarks. If you want to break 80, you need to know exactly where your game is leaking strokes.
The Strokes Gained Approach
At BGP, we use strokes gained analysis for every student working toward breaking 80. This methodology — the same one used on the PGA Tour — tells us precisely which part of your game is costing you the most strokes compared to your target scoring level.
Typical Strokes Gained Profile of a 10-15 Handicap
| Category | SG vs. Scratch |
|---|---|
| Off the Tee | -1.5 to -3.0 |
| Approach | -2.0 to -4.0 |
| Short Game | -1.0 to -2.5 |
| Putting | -1.5 to -3.0 |
The numbers don't lie. Most players at this level assume their problem is driving or putting. The data almost always shows that approach shots are the biggest opportunity. Getting closer to the hole from 100-200 yards is the single fastest path to breaking 80.
The Five Technical Requirements
1. Consistent Ball Striking
You need to hit the center of the clubface consistently. We measure this with launch monitor data — smash factor, ball speed consistency, and dispersion patterns. A player breaking 80 should have a smash factor above 1.45 with irons and tight dispersion.
2. Distance Control
Knowing your carry distances within 5 yards for every club is non-negotiable. We build a complete distance chart using Trackman data — carry, total, and landing angle for every club in your bag.
3. A Reliable Miss
At this level, you need to know which way your miss goes — and play for it. A controlled fade that misses the green right is better than a straight shot that could go either way. We work on shaping your stock shot and building a predictable miss pattern.
4. Short Game Scoring
Breaking 80 means getting up and down at least 40-50% of the time. That requires a variety of short game shots — low runners, medium pitches, high flops, and confident bunker play.
5. Pressure Putting
You need to make putts inside 8 feet with confidence. Not 100% — nobody does that — but at a rate that keeps par saves alive when you miss greens.
The Role of TPI at This Level
Physical limitations become more apparent as swing demands increase. A golfer trying to break 80 needs more speed, more consistency, and more stamina than a 90-shooter. Our TPI screening identifies the physical bottlenecks that prevent you from executing the swing changes your game needs.

Online Coaching for the Aspiring Single-Digit Player
Our Virtual Academy supports this level of player with advanced video analysis. You submit swings and we provide frame-by-frame analysis with launch data correlation. It's the same analysis we do in person — just delivered remotely. Many of our out-of-state students working toward single digits use this program exclusively.
The Typical Timeline
Breaking 80 isn't a quick fix. For a player currently shooting in the mid-80s, expect 6-12 months of focused work with a coach, regular practice, and consistent play. For a player in the high 80s to low 90s, it may take 12-18 months. The data guides the process — we track your strokes gained numbers monthly and adjust the plan as your game evolves.
