Can Golf Lessons Help You Break 90, 80, or 70?

Want to break 90, 80, or even 70? A golf coach explains what it takes at each scoring barrier and how lessons help you get there.

Yes. Each scoring barrier requires different skills, and that's exactly where coaching helps. A coach identifies what's holding you back at your current level and focuses on the skills that will get you to the next one. Here's what each milestone takes.

Breaking 90: eliminate the big numbers

To break 90, you don't need pars. You need to avoid disasters. Most golfers shooting in the 90s lose strokes to:

    • Penalty strokes from a slice or hook
    • Fat and thin shots that go nowhere
    • Multiple chips to get on the green
    • Three-putts

What lessons focus on: solid contact through low point control, a reliable ball flight off the tee (even if it's not long), basic chipping, and lag putting. Course management helps too, like laying up instead of trying the hero shot.

Bogey golf, a 5 on every par 4, equals about 90. Avoiding doubles and triples is the whole game.

Breaking 80: consistency and short game

At this level, you're hitting it reasonably well. Breaking 80 is about doing it more often and saving strokes around the green.

What lessons focus on: consistent iron contact and distances, clubface control so your misses are predictable, wedge distance control from 50 to 120 yards, and getting up and down more often. Smart strategy, like playing to the fat part of the green, becomes a big factor.

    Breaking 70: precision and performance

Breaking 70 is elite golf. It requires efficient ball striking, strong scoring from short range, excellent putting, and a stable mental game.

What lessons focus on: fine-tuning path and face control, optimizing launch and spin with launch monitor data, wedge precision, a repeatable putting stroke, physical training for speed and durability, and on-course performance under pressure.

    How we coach each milestone

At Beyond Golf Performance, we teach from impact around three principles: low point control, the club path and face relationship, and lag for power. Every player starts with a TPI screen so their swing fits their body.

Then we tailor the work to the goal. Phase One includes putting and chipping, wedges and short irons, driver, and an on-course assessment where we rate your routine, confidence, ball striking, short game, and putting. That assessment shows us exactly where your strokes are going.

Our full 18-month program is designed to take 15 to 18 strokes off your game, the kind of drop that takes a golfer from the mid-90s into the 70s.

    Set your next scoring goal

Whatever number you're chasing, we'll build the plan to get you there. We coach golfers from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, and Round Rock at Balcones Golf Academy.
