# Golf Instructor Red Flags: Who to Avoid

Not every golf instructor is worth your time or money. Here are 9 red flags to watch for before and during golf lessons.

Golfer thinking through practice with intention

Most golf instructors genuinely want to help. But some approaches waste your time and money, or even make your game worse. Here are the red flags we'd watch for if we were hiring a coach ourselves.

## Red flag 1: "There's only one right way to swing"

If a coach teaches every student the exact same swing model, be cautious. Bodies differ in flexibility, strength, and proportions. A good coach adapts the swing to you. At Beyond Golf Performance, we screen every student with TPI precisely because one size doesn't fit all.

## Red flag 2: No assessment

A coach who starts changing your swing before understanding your goals, history, or physical limits is guessing. The first session should include questions and some kind of evaluation.

## Red flag 3: Five fixes at once

Overloading you with swing thoughts feels like a lot of value. It isn't. You'll leave confused and unable to practice effectively. Good coaches prioritize one change at a time.

## Red flag 4: They can't explain why

If you ask why a drill works and the answer is "just trust me," that's a problem. You should understand the purpose of what you're doing, at least in simple terms.

## Red flag 5: No plan or follow-up

Lessons that don't connect to each other lead nowhere. A good coach can tell you where you are, where you're going, and how many sessions it might take.

## Red flag 6: Equipment over instruction

If a coach's first answer to every problem is a new club, shaft, or training aid, be skeptical. Equipment matters, but it rarely fixes a swing flaw on its own.

## Red flag 7: Your body hurts

A new swing may feel awkward. It shouldn't feel painful. A coach who ignores pain or pushes positions your body can't safely make is putting you at risk.

## Red flag 8: Only range work, never the course

Scoring requires course skills: strategy, routine, and managing pressure. A coach who never takes you on the course is missing half the game. Every BGP Phase One includes an on-course session.

## Red flag 9: Guaranteed overnight results

Real improvement takes time and practice. Be wary of anyone promising you'll drop 10 strokes in two weeks. Credible programs set realistic timelines, like our 18-month series built to take 15 to 18 strokes off your game.

## Green flags to look for instead

- A body assessment and goals conversation
- One clear priority at a time
- Data from tools like TrackMan
- A written practice plan
- On-course coaching
- Measurable progress over weeks and months
