Golfers practicing on the driving range

It's a common question: if you only have so much time and money, should you spend it on lessons or on range balls? The honest answer is that they do different jobs, and you need both. But the order matters. Lessons tell you what to practice. The range is where you make it stick.

## What lessons do that the range can't

**Diagnosis.** On your own, you can hit 1,000 balls and still not know why you slice. A coach identifies the cause in minutes.

**Direction.** Lessons tell you what to practice. Without that, range time often reinforces the same bad habits.

**Feedback.** A coach catches small errors before they become patterns.

**Body insight.** A TPI screen reveals physical limits that no amount of range time will show you.

## What the range does that lessons can't

**Repetition.** Motor skills need repetition. A lesson introduces the move. Hundreds of quality reps make it automatic.

**Ownership.** Practicing on your own forces you to self-correct, a skill you need on the course.

**Volume at low cost.** Range time is cheaper than coaching time, so it's where you build volume.

## The problem with range-only improvement

Most golfers who only use the range plateau. They grind out buckets, get comfortable with their flaws, and stop improving. Practice makes permanent, not perfect. If you practice a flawed motion, you get very good at a flawed motion.

## The problem with lesson-only improvement

On the other hand, golfers who take lessons but never practice end up paying to relearn the same thing every session. The change never becomes theirs.

## The right balance

For most golfers, we recommend:

- One lesson every one to two weeks during an active improvement phase
- Two to three practice sessions between each lesson
- At least half of practice on short game
- Regular rounds to test changes on the course

## How to practice smarter on the range

1. Warm up with short clubs before moving to driver.
2. Practice your assigned drill with slow, deliberate reps.
3. Pick a target for every ball.
4. Finish by simulating holes, changing clubs and targets each shot.

Every Beyond Golf Performance student gets a weekly practice plan, and our Beyond Reps app lays out drills so range sessions have structure.

## Get both in Austin

At Balcones Golf Academy, we coach golfers from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown, and give you the plan to make range time count.
