For most golfers, one lesson every one to two weeks is the sweet spot. That gives you enough time to practice a change before adding the next one, without so much time that you drift back into old habits. But the right frequency depends on your level, your goals, and one thing people often forget: how much you practice.
The practice-to-lesson ratio
Here's a simple rule we use at Beyond Golf Performance: plan on at least two to three practice sessions between every lesson. A lesson introduces a change. Practice makes it yours. If you take lessons twice a week but never practice, you'll just collect information you can't use on the course.
Recommended frequency by level
Beginners. Weekly lessons work great early on. You're learning fundamentals fast, and frequent feedback keeps you from building bad habits. After the first month or two, every other week is usually plenty.
Mid-handicappers (10 to 20). Every one to two weeks during an active improvement phase. Then you can taper to monthly check-ins once a change sticks.
Low handicappers and competitive players. It varies. Some work weekly during the off-season on bigger changes, then shift to occasional tune-ups and on-course sessions during tournament season.
Juniors. Consistent weekly sessions work best for kids. Our After School Academy runs on a weekly rhythm through the school year because routine builds skill and confidence.
Signs you're taking lessons too often
- You haven't practiced the last change yet.
- You feel overloaded with swing thoughts.
- Your swing feels worse and more confused, not better.
Signs you're not taking them often enough
- Old habits keep creeping back between sessions.
- You aren't sure if you're practicing correctly.
- You've plateaued for months.
Why phased programs work
This is why we structure coaching into phases instead of random one-off lessons. Each five-session phase builds on the last. Phase One covers a TPI screen, ball striking from short game to long game, and an on-course session. You also get a custom weekly practice plan for your first month. The rhythm is built in, so you don't have to guess.
Golfers who complete our full 18-month program follow a steady cadence of sessions and practice, and that consistency is what drives lasting results.
