You've taken a few lessons. Some days feel great, some feel confusing. How do you know whether your instructor is actually good, or just friendly? Here's a practical checklist.
Sign 1: You understand your swing
After a few sessions with a good coach, you should be able to explain your main swing issue and why it happens. Not in jargon. In plain language. If you still have no idea what's going on, something's off.
Sign 2: They focus on one thing at a time
Good coaches prioritize. They pick the change that matters most and stick with it until it holds. If every lesson introduces three new swing thoughts, you're being overloaded.
Sign 3: The plan has a direction
Lessons should connect. This week's work builds on last week's. A good instructor can tell you where you are in the process and what comes next. At Beyond Golf Performance, that direction comes from our phased programs and session notes shared across our coaching team.
Sign 4: They measure progress
You shouldn't have to guess if you're improving. A good coach tracks data, like ball speed, club path, face angle, fairways hit, putts per round, and handicap. Numbers keep everyone honest.
Sign 5: They adapt to your body
If your coach asks you to make a move that hurts, or that you physically can't make, they're coaching a model, not you. TPI-certified coaches screen your body and design a swing that fits it.
Sign 6: They coach beyond the range
A great instructor cares about your scores, not just your range swing. Look for on-course coaching, short-game work, and course strategy.
Sign 7: You leave with homework
Every lesson should end with clear practice instructions. If you walk away without knowing what to do next, the lesson isn't finished.
Sign 8: You're improving, even if slowly
Improvement isn't always linear. Expect dips when you change something. But over two to three months, you should see real progress: better contact, straighter shots, or lower scores.
Warning signs
- Every lesson feels like starting over
- They blame you without explaining
- They push equipment over instruction
- You feel more confused after lessons than before
- They can't explain why a drill works
A fair test
Give any coach about five sessions plus real practice before you judge. That's why our Phase One program is five sessions: enough to assess, coach, and see results on the course.
