# The Best Short Game Drill to Lower Your Golf Scores Fast

Strokes gained around the green is the single most impactful stat in amateur golf. This one drill, practiced for 20 minutes a week, will transform your up-and-down percentage permanently.

## Where Strokes Are Actually Lost

Ask most amateurs what they need to work on and they'll say their driver or their irons. But the data tells a completely different story. For golfers shooting between 85 and 100, strokes gained analysis consistently shows that the short game — shots inside 50 yards — is where the most strokes are lost relative to better players.

The average 90-shooter misses 12 greens per round. Their up-and-down percentage? Around 15%. A scratch golfer gets up and down about 55% of the time from similar positions. That gap alone accounts for 4-5 strokes per round.

The fix isn't complicated. It's one drill, practiced consistently, that transforms your feel around the green.

## The 3-6-9 Ladder Drill

This is the drill we assign to every student in our program, and it's the one drill I'd keep if I could only keep one. It builds distance control, touch, and confidence around the green faster than anything else I've seen in two decades of coaching.

### Setup

Find a practice green with some space. Place three targets at roughly 10 feet, 20 feet, and 30 feet from your chipping position. You can use tees, towels, or alignment sticks to mark the distances.

### The Drill

Using your most comfortable chipping club (I recommend starting with a 56-degree wedge), hit three balls to each target:

- **3 balls to the 10-foot target** — These are your touch shots. Small motion, soft landing.
- **3 balls to the 20-foot target** — Medium motion, controlled trajectory.
- **3 balls to the 30-foot target** — Bigger motion, letting the club do the work.

That's one ladder. Do three ladders (27 balls total). It takes about 15-20 minutes.

### Why It Works

The ladder forces your brain to calibrate distance through feel, not mechanics. You're not thinking about wrist hinge or weight shift — you're thinking about _where the ball needs to land_. That external focus is exactly how elite short game players operate.

By alternating distances, you prevent the "groove" effect where you hit the same shot 20 times and feel great but can't replicate it on the course. The ladder keeps your brain adapting, which is exactly what the course demands.

## The Scoring Zone Connection

When your 10-20-30 foot distance control improves, everything around the green gets better. Your chips finish closer to the hole, which means shorter putts. Shorter putts mean more makes. More makes mean more up-and-downs. More up-and-downs mean lower scores.

It's the most direct path from practice to scorecard improvement in golf.

## Adding Pressure

Once the basic ladder feels comfortable, add a scoring element. Give yourself one point for each ball that finishes within a club-length of the target. Track your score out of 9 per ladder. Compete against yourself. When you can consistently score 6 or higher, you'll notice the difference on the course.

Our Student Dashboard includes short game training games that follow this same progression — building feel first, then adding pressure to simulate on-course situations.

## The 20-Minute Investment

This drill doesn't require an hour at the practice facility. Twenty minutes, once or twice a week, is enough to see meaningful improvement within a month. Most golfers spend their limited practice time hitting drivers. The ones who lower their scores spend it around the green.

Start this week. Track your up-and-down percentage on the dashboard. In 30 days, compare the numbers. The drill works — but only if you do it.
