There are a lot of golf instructors out there. Some are worth every penny. Others leave you more confused than when you started. After years of coaching golfers in Austin, here's what we believe makes an instructor genuinely worth hiring.
1. They coach you, not a model
The best instructors don't force every student into the same swing. They understand that bodies differ, and they build a swing that fits yours. That starts with an assessment of how you move. At Beyond Golf Performance, every student gets a TPI screen before we change anything.
2. They have a clear philosophy
A great coach can explain how they teach in a sentence or two. Ours: we teach from impact, focusing on low point control, the club path and face relationship, and lag for power, with the body assessed through TPI. Clear philosophy leads to clear coaching.
3. They give you a plan
Random tips don't create lasting change. A coach worth hiring maps out where you're going and how you'll get there. Our programs run in phases of five sessions, each with defined goals, building toward an 18-month series designed to take 15 to 18 strokes off your game.
4. They measure what matters
If progress isn't measured, it's guesswork. Look for a coach who uses data from tools like TrackMan and HackMotion, tracks on-course performance, and shows you where you started and where you are now.
5. They coach the whole game
Full swing matters, but so do putting, chipping, wedge play, course management, and the mental side. An instructor worth hiring coaches you on the course, not just on the range.
6. They make you a better practicer
You spend far more time practicing alone than with your coach. Great instructors give you drills, practice plans, and tools that make that solo time effective. Our students get a custom weekly plan and access to the Beyond Reps app.
7. They're invested in you
The best coaches care about your goals, communicate between sessions, and keep you accountable. They celebrate your wins and help you through the frustrating stretches. At BGP, our coaches log every session so the whole team knows your progress.
Bonus: they make golf more fun
Golf should be enjoyable. A coach who makes you excited to practice and play is worth a lot.
What to avoid
Be cautious of coaches who promise instant fixes, push gear over instruction, or can't explain their reasoning.
