You don't technically need a lesson before your first round. Nobody checks. But one or two lessons beforehand can turn a stressful, embarrassing day into a genuinely fun one. Here's what a pre-round lesson can do for you, and what to focus on if you only have one.
Why a lesson helps before your first round
Your first round is when golf either hooks you or scares you off. Golfers who show up with zero instruction often spend the day topping balls, losing sleeves, and holding up groups behind them. That's not fun for anyone.
A short lesson gives you a few basics that make a huge difference:
- A grip and setup that let you make contact
- A simple swing you can repeat
- Basic putting and chipping
- Etiquette and pace of play
If you only get one lesson, focus here
Contact over distance. Don't worry about hitting it far. Learn to hit the ball before the ground. That's low point control, and it's the first thing we teach at Beyond Golf Performance.
Short game. Most of your strokes in a first round will happen around the green. A few chipping and putting basics will save you a ton of shots and frustration.
One reliable club. Many beginners do better off the tee with a hybrid or a 7-iron than with a driver. A coach can help you find your "go-to" club.
The etiquette nobody tells you
A good coach will also cover the unwritten rules:
- Keep up with the group in front of you.
- Pick up your ball when you hit double par. Nobody minds.
- Repair ball marks and replace divots.
- Stay still and quiet when others hit.
- Let faster groups play through.
Knowing this stuff makes you a welcome playing partner, even if your score is high.
Better yet, play your first holes with a coach
An on-course lesson is the best possible prep. We play a few holes together, walk you through club choice, where to aim, and how to keep things moving. Every Phase One program at BGP includes an on-course session for exactly this reason.
Pick the right course
For your first round around Austin, choose a shorter or less crowded course, and play at a quiet time like a weekday afternoon. Nine holes is plenty to start.
Get ready for your first round
We help first-time golfers from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown get course-ready at Balcones Golf Academy.
