How to Prepare for a Golf Lesson So You Learn Faster

The work you do before a golf lesson shapes how much you learn. Here's how to prepare physically and mentally so every lesson moves you forward faster.

Most golfers think the lesson starts when the coach says hello. In reality, how you prepare in the days and hours before has a big impact on how much you learn. Here's a simple preparation routine that helps our students improve faster.

    The week before

Practice your last assignment. Show up having done the homework from your previous lesson. Then your coach can build on it instead of repeating it. If you struggled with a drill, note where it broke down.

Track your rounds. Write down a few simple stats: fairways hit, greens in regulation, number of putts, and penalty strokes. These numbers help your coach see where strokes are really going.

Note your misses. Is your bad shot a slice, a hook, a fat iron, or a thin chip? Patterns matter more than one-off shots.

Film a few swings. Face-on and down-the-line videos from practice or the course show your coach how your swing holds up without them watching.

    The day before

Set one goal for the session. Think about what would make the lesson a win. "Understand why I hit my driver right" is a great goal.

Write down your questions. You'll forget them otherwise.

Rest. Show up fresh. A tired body learns movement poorly.

    The day of

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Check in, stretch, and hit a few easy shots.

Warm up your body. Simple rotations, hip openers, and arm swings get you moving. If your coach gave you TPI exercises, do them.

Hydrate. In the Austin heat, this matters more than most people realize.

Bring the right gear. Your clubs, balls, a glove, water, and your phone for recording.

    During the lesson

Be open. Changes often feel awkward at first. That's a sign you're doing something new.

Speak up. If something hurts, feels confusing, or doesn't make sense, say so.

Film the key drills. Capture what you need to practice.

Confirm your plan before leaving. Repeat back what you'll work on and how.

    Why preparation speeds things up

When you arrive prepared, your coach spends less time catching up and more time moving you forward. Over a five-session phase, that adds up to a lot of extra progress.
