Can a Golf Coach Fix My Slice?

Yes, a good golf coach can fix your slice, usually faster than you think. Here's what causes a slice and how coaches fix it for good.

Yes. The slice is the most common ball flight problem in golf, and it's one of the most fixable. Most of our students who come in slicing see a real change within their first few sessions. The key is fixing the cause, not just the symptom.

    What actually causes a slice

A slice happens when the clubface is open relative to the path the club is swinging on at impact. For a right-handed golfer, that sends the ball curving to the right. Two things are almost always involved:

    • An open clubface. The face points right of where the club is traveling.
    • An out-to-in path. The club cuts across the ball from outside the target line to inside.

Combine the two, and you get that familiar banana ball into the trees on the right.

Why the slice gets worse on its own

Here's the trap. You slice, so you start aiming further left to compensate. Aiming left encourages an even more out-to-in swing. The path gets worse, the curve gets bigger, and you aim even further left. Golfers can spend years in this loop.

Root causes a coach looks for

The slice is a symptom. The cause might be:

    1. Grip. A weak grip makes it hard to square the face.
    2. Setup. Shoulders aimed left, or the ball too far forward, pre-sets an out-to-in path.
    3. Body limits. If your hips or upper back don't rotate well, your arms take over and swing across the ball. A TPI screen spots this fast.
    4. Sequencing. Starting the downswing with the shoulders instead of the lower body throws the club outside.
    5. Wrist position. A cupped lead wrist at the top often leads to an open face. We measure this with HackMotion.

How we fix it at Beyond Golf Performance

We always teach from impact. We measure your club path and face angle on TrackMan so we know exactly what's happening. Then we fix the biggest cause first. Sometimes it's as simple as a grip change. Other times it's teaching your body to start the downswing from the ground up, using ground forces to sequence the swing properly.

We also give you drills to groove the change, like swinging to a target with an alignment stick or hitting soft draws with shorter clubs before moving to driver.

    What to expect

The slice often straightens within one to three sessions on the range. Making the fix hold up on the course takes a few weeks of practice. Once it does, you'll hit more fairways, lose fewer balls, and likely pick up distance, since a slice wastes a lot of power.

    Say goodbye to your slice
