Two golfers can take the same lessons from the same coach and get completely different results. The difference usually isn't talent. It's what they do before, during, and after each session. Here's how to get maximum value from your coaching.
Before the lesson
1. Set a clear goal. "Get better" is vague. "Stop hitting my irons fat" or "break 90 by spring" gives your coach something to build around.
2. Share honest information. Tell your coach about injuries, how often you can practice, and what you've been working on. Honest info leads to a better plan.
3. Warm up. Arrive early and loosen up so the first 10 minutes aren't spent stretching.
During the lesson
4. Ask why. Understanding the reason behind a change helps you practice it correctly on your own.
5. Stay with one focus. Resist the urge to ask about every part of your game. Depth beats breadth.
6. Record key moments. Film the drill, the feel, and your coach's explanation. You'll forget details within days.
7. Expect awkward. A good change often feels strange. Trust it. Judge by the process, not by every ball.
After the lesson
8. Practice within 48 hours. Reinforce the change while it's fresh. Even 20 minutes helps.
9. Follow the plan. Every Beyond Golf Performance student leaves with a weekly practice plan. Golfers who follow it improve dramatically faster than those who freelance. Our Beyond Reps app makes tracking easy.
10. Take it to the course. Range changes need to be tested where it counts. Play a few holes focused only on your new move, not your score.
Things that waste lessons
- Mixing in tips from friends or YouTube
- Long gaps between sessions
- Skipping practice and hoping the next lesson fixes things
- Changing coaches every few months
- Booking lessons only when you're playing badly
Think in phases, not lessons
One of the biggest mindset shifts is seeing coaching as a program, not a string of appointments. Our phases are five sessions each, with clear goals: a TPI screen, short game, ball striking, and on-course coaching. Each phase builds on the last. Students who commit to a series of phases get the most from every dollar.
Do your homework
We expect our students to complete assigned practice. It's part of our Coach and Student Commitment. Coaching is a partnership, and your effort between sessions is half the equation.
Make your next lesson count
We coach golfers from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown at Balcones Golf Academy.
