A lot of golfers picture a golf coach as someone who stands behind you on the range and says "keep your head down." Modern golf coaching is a lot more than that. A good coach is part diagnostician, part teacher, part strategist, and part accountability partner. Here's what that looks like in practice.
1. Diagnoses the real problem
Your ball flight tells a story. A coach reads it backward. If you slice, the coach figures out why: an open clubface, an out-to-in path, a weak grip, a setup issue, or a body that can't rotate well. Fixing the cause matters far more than treating the symptom.
At Beyond Golf Performance, we always teach from impact. We look at the moment the club meets the ball and work backward from there.
2. Assesses your body
Your swing is limited by how your body moves. A TPI-certified coach screens your mobility, stability, and strength. If your hips can't rotate, you'll find another way to turn, and that compensation often causes your swing problems. Knowing your physical limits lets a coach build a swing that fits you.
3. Measures what matters
Coaches use tools like TrackMan to measure club path, face angle, ball speed, and spin. HackMotion shows wrist angles. Video reveals body motion. These tools turn "I think" into "we know."
4. Prioritizes
Most golfers have five or six things they could fix. A good coach picks the one that will help most right now. At BGP, we focus on three principles: low point control, the club path and face relationship, and lag for power. Everything else follows.
5. Teaches you how to practice
A coach doesn't just tell you what to change. They give you drills, feels, and a practice plan. Our students get a custom weekly plan, plus access to our Beyond Reps app for drills between sessions.
6. Coaches on the course
Scoring is a different skill than hitting range balls. On-course coaching covers club selection, target choice, pre-shot routine, and managing nerves. In our Phase One program, one full session happens on the course.
7. Tracks progress and adjusts
Coaching is a long game. A coach tracks your stats, notes what's working, and adjusts the plan. Our coaches log every session so whoever works with you next knows exactly where you left off.
8. Keeps you accountable
It's easy to skip practice when nobody's checking. A coach keeps you honest and motivated, especially when progress feels slow.
