Hiring a golf coach is like hiring any professional. A few good questions up front can save you months of frustration and a lot of money. Here are the ten we'd ask if we were in your shoes, plus what a good answer sounds like.
1. "What does your first session look like?"
A good answer includes a conversation about your goals, some kind of assessment, and a clear first priority. Be cautious of "we'll just hit balls and see."
2. "Do you assess my body, or just my swing?"
Your mobility, stability, and strength shape what your swing can do. Coaches with TPI certification screen your body so they don't ask you to make moves you physically can't.
3. "Is there one right way to swing?"
The best answer is no. Great coaches build a swing around your body and tendencies. Be wary of anyone who teaches every student the same model.
4. "What technology do you use?"
Launch monitors like TrackMan, video analysis, and sensors like HackMotion give objective feedback. Tech isn't everything, but it removes guesswork.
5. "How will we measure progress?"
Look for concrete measures: handicap, scoring average, ball speed, dispersion, or short-game stats. Progress should be visible, not just a feeling.
6. "Do you coach on the course?"
The range and the course are different worlds. A coach who plays with you will see your decision-making, routine, and nerves, things that never show up on the range.
7. "What will I practice between sessions?"
You should get a specific plan. If your coach can't tell you what to work on this week, the lesson didn't end properly.
8. "How many lessons will it take?"
Nobody can promise exact results, but a good coach can outline a realistic timeline based on your starting point and how much you can practice.
9. "Who else will I work with?"
Some academies use a team approach. At Beyond Golf Performance, students work with our whole coaching team by default, and coaches share notes so nothing gets lost. You can also request one coach.
10. "What's your policy on cancellations and packages?"
Know the rules before you buy. Ask about rescheduling, no-shows, and whether packages can be transferred.
How we'd answer
At BGP, every program starts with a TPI screen, we teach from impact, and we coach on the course. You get a weekly practice plan and a phased program with clear checkpoints. Our packages are transferable to another golfer if your plans change.
