What to Bring to Your First Golf Lesson

Heading to your first golf lesson? Here's a simple checklist of what to bring and wear, plus a few tips for lessons in the Texas heat.

Showing up prepared means more time learning and less time scrambling. Here's a simple checklist for your first lesson, with a few Central Texas-specific tips mixed in.

    The essentials

Your clubs. Bring whatever you have, even if it's an old hand-me-down set or a few borrowed clubs. Your coach wants to see what you're actually playing with. If you don't own clubs, let us know when you book and we'll have some ready.

Golf balls. Bring a sleeve or two in case the lesson moves to the short-game area or the course.

A glove. Optional for beginners, but most golfers wear one on their lead hand for grip.

Water. Non-negotiable in Texas. Bring more than you think you need, especially from May through September.

    What to wear

    • Collared shirt. Standard at most clubs, including Balcones Country Club.
    • Golf pants or shorts. No jeans.
    • Golf shoes or athletic sneakers. Flat-soled sneakers with grip work fine for a first lesson.
    • Hat and sunscreen. The Austin sun is no joke, even in winter.
    • Layers. Cool mornings in the fall and winter can warm up fast.

    Helpful extras

Your phone. Record your swing and the key drills your coach shows you. You'll want them for practice later.

A notebook or notes app. Jot down your practice plan before you forget it.

Your scorecard or stats. If you've played before, bring a recent scorecard or your handicap info. It helps your coach see where strokes are going.

Health info. Tell your coach about any injuries, surgeries, or pain. It shapes how we build your swing.

    Bring the right mindset

The most important thing to bring isn't gear. It's openness. Expect a new move to feel awkward at first. Ask questions. Don't worry about looking silly. Every coach on our team has seen it all, and nobody's judging.

    What you don't need

    • Brand-new clubs
    • A rangefinder or launch monitor (we have TrackMan)
    • Expensive golf apparel
    • Any prior experience

    Arrive early

Get there 10 to 15 minutes before your lesson. Check in, stretch, and hit a few easy balls if you can. You'll get more out of your session.

    What happens next

Your first Beyond Golf Performance session usually includes a goals conversation, a TPI movement screen, swing video, and TrackMan data. You'll leave with a clear focus and a practice plan.
