A lot of people put off their first golf lesson because they're nervous. They worry they'll look silly, or that the coach will judge them. Here's the truth: every coach on our team has seen thousands of swings, and nobody is judging yours. Your first lesson is about getting to know you and building a starting point.
Before you arrive
When you book with Beyond Golf Performance, you'll get a confirmation with the location and what to bring. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Collared shirts are standard at most clubs, including Balcones. Bring your clubs if you have them. If you don't, we'll have some for you.
Arrive 10 minutes early. Hitting a few balls to loosen up before we start helps a lot.
The conversation
We start by talking, not swinging. Expect questions like:
- How long have you played, and how often?
- What's your typical score or handicap?
- What do you want golf to do for you? Play with your kids? Break 90? Compete?
- Any injuries or physical limitations?
- What's your biggest frustration right now?
Your answers shape everything that follows.
The assessment
Most BGP programs start with a TPI screen. It's a short series of movement tests, like rotating your hips while your shoulders stay still, or holding a squat. It tells us what your body can and can't do. If your hips don't rotate well, for example, we won't ask you to make a big hip turn. We'll build a swing that works with your body.
Then you'll hit some balls. We record your swing on video and capture ball and club data on TrackMan.
The first fix
We look at your impact first. Did the club bottom out before or after the ball? Was the face open or closed? From there, we pick one thing to work on. Just one. Trying to fix everything at once is how golfers get overwhelmed.
Expect your swing to feel strange at first. A good change usually feels awkward before it feels natural. That's normal.
What you'll leave with
By the end, you'll have:
- A clear explanation of your biggest issue and why it happens
- One or two drills you understand
- A simple practice plan for the week
- A plan for the next few sessions
What not to expect
Don't expect to leave with a perfect swing. Don't expect to shoot your best score the next day, either. Real improvement builds over weeks. A great first lesson leaves you clearer, not finished.
