Yes. If you're serious about enjoying golf, hiring a coach as a beginner is the single best investment you can make. It isn't because you can't figure things out on your own. It's because the habits you build in your first six months tend to stick for years.
The beginner advantage nobody talks about
Beginners are the easiest golfers to coach. You don't have 20 years of compensations baked into your swing. There's no over-the-top move you've been fighting since college, no grip you've "made work." You're a blank canvas, and that's a gift.
At Beyond Golf Performance, some of our fastest-improving students are people who had never held a club before their first session. Within a few months, they're making solid contact and enjoying rounds with friends. Meanwhile, the self-taught golfer down the range is still searching for the same fix they found on YouTube last week.
What goes wrong when you teach yourself
Most self-taught beginners run into the same three problems:
- Poor contact. They hit behind the ball or top it because they never learned to control where the club bottoms out. We call this low point control, and it's the foundation of everything.
- A slice. An open clubface combined with an out-to-in path sends the ball curving right. Without someone explaining why, people swing harder and make it worse.
- A swing that doesn't fit their body. A tight-hipped 50-year-old trying to copy a tour pro's turn will hurt something before they hit it better.
A coach catches these early, before they turn into habits.
What a beginner program looks like at BGP
We don't believe there's one right way to swing. Your swing should match your body. That's why every new student starts with a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) screen, a short movement assessment that shows us your mobility, stability, and strength. From there we build your swing around what your body can do.
Our Phase One program covers five sessions: the TPI screen, putting and chipping, wedges and short irons, driver, and an on-course session where we play holes together. You'll leave with a weekly practice plan so your time at the range actually means something.
Is it worth the money?
Think about what you'll spend on golf anyway: clubs, range balls, green fees. Without guidance, a lot of that spend goes toward practicing the wrong things. A few lessons early on make every dollar after that go further.
