We love coaching beginners. But after thousands of lessons, we see the same mistakes slow people down over and over. None of them are about talent. They're about approach. Avoid these and you'll improve much faster.

    1. Taking one lesson and stopping

One lesson gives you information. A series of lessons gives you skill. Beginners who take a single lesson often leave with a great feel that disappears within a week. Plan on at least a few sessions to build a foundation.

    2. Not practicing between lessons

Your coach introduces changes. Practice makes them stick. If you only swing a club during lessons, you'll spend each session relearning last week's material. Even two short practice sessions a week make a huge difference.

    3. Practicing the old swing

This is a sneaky one. You go to the range, the new move feels awkward, so you slip back into your old swing because it "feels better." Then you wonder why nothing's changing. Stick with the drills, even when they feel strange.

    4. Judging the change by the result

A new move might send the ball in odd directions at first. That's normal. Judge the change by whether you're doing it correctly, not by where every ball goes.

    5. Getting tips from everyone

Your buddy at the course, a YouTube video, a guy on the next range mat. Too many voices create confusion. Pick one coach or one coaching team and trust the process.

    6. Only working on the driver

The driver is fun. But beginners lose most of their strokes around the green. Putting and chipping deserve at least half your practice time.

    7. Ignoring their body

Tight hips, a stiff back, or weak core stability limit what your swing can do. That's why every Beyond Golf Performance program starts with a TPI screen. Ignoring physical limits leads to compensations and sometimes injuries.

    8. Not asking questions

If you don't understand why you're doing a drill, ask. Understanding the why helps you practice correctly on your own. A good coach welcomes questions.

    9. Expecting instant results

Golf rewards patience. Most beginners see better contact within a few weeks and lower scores within a couple of months. Real, lasting change takes longer. Enjoy the process.

    Set yourself up to succeed

We designed our Phase One program to avoid these mistakes. Five sessions cover the TPI screen, short game, ball striking, and on-course play. You also get a weekly practice plan and our Beyond Reps app for drills between sessions.
